Oaxaca Travel Tips

Money Matters ...

Banks, currency and credit cards

Visitors to Oaxaca can access the ATM at Bancomer which are available with the PLUS and CIRRUS systems, these systems offer menus in Spanish and English. Most currencies can be changed at exchange houses. Although the US Dollar is accepted in most places we recommend using the Mexican Peso. Remember that hotels provide the lowest exchange rates and even lower for travellers checks.

Service Tips

  1. Service tips in Mexico generally follow the rule of 15%
  2. It is customary to tip the man or woman in the gas station if he or she checks the oil, water or if they clean the windshield.
  3. Usually, it is not customary to tip the taxi driver, this is left to your choice depending on the quality of service.
  4. Normally you would tip service staff (waitresses, waiters, baggage handlers).

WHAT TO PACK FOR YOUR TRIP TO OAXACA ...

In Oaxaca casual dress is appropriate for almost all occasions. In general, the climate in Oaxaca State is hot with the exception Oaxaca City in the winter, when a sweater might be needed. also in other regions high in the Oaxacan mountains. There are some customs in particular with relation to the "proper attire" for certain times and places:

  • Swimwear (particularly women) should NOT be used outside the beach or pool area.
  • Striking or suggestive clothing is not appropriate for small Oaxacan towns or in Oaxaca city.
  • Shorts should not be worn when entering a church.

Do not forget to pack:

  • Sunglasses
  • Suntan
  • A pair of extra glasses or contact lenses
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Travel Documents
  • Prescription
  • A first aid kit
  • A hat
  • Insect repellent
  • A flashlight
  • Small appliances such as a dryer
  • Camara and film
  • Extra batteries
  • Spirit of adventure and a good sense of humour

Traveling with

Kids:

Travelling with infants and young children should not be a problem. Mexicans adore children and are accustomed to seeing them in restaurants and hotels. Bring your own baby food, diapers and medicine. These are available and cheap in Mexico but may not be of equal quality. It's easy to get nannies especially among hotel housekeepers. Generally not speaking English, but this does not seem to bother the children. Check with reception for details. Now many hotels offer programs for children, and that allows parents to enjoy a peaceful vacation time.

Handicapped or disabled:

Facilities for disabled travellers in Mexico have improved, although the lack of ramps, elevators and sidewalks with plenty of concrete stairs can make the trip to Mexico a bit difficult. However, in Oaxaca City there is an association called the State Council of Organizations of People with Disabilities BC, the President is Mr. Cornelius Nuñez Díaz and the phone number is (951) 3 83 79. They will assist and inform you if you have any questions.
